Chandrayaan is India’s lunar program which means “Moon Vehicle” in Sanskrit. It is India’s ambitious space exploration program to study Moon, under which 2 Indian moon mission launched till now called Chandrayaan 1, 2 and 3 is the next to be launched.

Chandrayaan 1

  • This mission was launched on 22 October 2008.
  • It was India’s first moon mission, was an unmanned spacecraft along with 11 scientific payloads.
  • This mission consisted of an orbiter and impactor.
  • It was manufactured to scrutnize the orbiting around it at a height of 100 km from the lunar surface.
  • Achieved more than 90% of its planned objectives within intended 2 years.
  • Its biggest contribution is the discovery of water.

chandrayaan 2 launch time and date

  • It was launched on 22 July 2019 from Satish Dhawan Space Center, Sriharikota at 2.43pm
  • India’s second mission to the Moon, it was a totally indigenous mission.
  • It includes Orbiter, Lander, and Rover, the Lander housing the Rover will separate from the Orbiter.
  • After successfully coming down, the Lander will soft land on the lunar surface at a specified location and deploy a Rover.
  • The payload’s goal was to gather scientific data about the moon’s surface, mineralogy, elemental abundance, lunar exosphere, and also to study the density of the electrons in the Moon’s ionosphere etc.
  • Total budget of this mission was ₹970 crore and launch cost was ₹367 crore.
  • This mission was a partial failure.

  • In this mission ISRO will send a lander and rover on the surface of the moon.
  • It will not have an Orbiter.
  • Thrust module will work as a communication relay satellite.
  • Its lander will have four throttle-able engines and also carry a Laser Doppler Velocimeter to more precisely calculate Lander’s speed.
  • Total budget of this mission will be ₹615 crore.
  • It will be launched with the help of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark 3 rocket.
  • After Russia, China and the United States of America, India can become the fourth country to softly land on the lunar surface.
  • Main objective of this mission is to get the Rover moving on the Moon surface and to conduct scientific examination.
  • Chandrayaan 3 launch is scheduled for July 14, 2023, at 2:35 pm IST from SDSC, Sriharikota
